Carbon markets is a hot topic these days, and with the launch of HKEX’s CORE Climate, this is the first step to shaping Hong Kong’s growth as Asia’s premier carbon hub.
Our founder, Ben McQuhae, was invited to moderate a panel discussion hosted by the Hong Kong Green Finance Association (HKGFA) on 6 January 2023 on “What’s Next for Hong Kong’s Carbon Market?” to explore the latest developments and opportunities for Hong Kong’s carbon markets with New World Development Company Limited, Standard Chartered Bank and the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). The panel discussion stressed the role of financial institutions, corporates, regulators and international standards in facilitating a liquid and well-functioning carbon market.
Dr. Ma Jun, Chairman and President of the HKGFA also provided the opening and closing remarks, highlighting the carbon finance opportunities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), the necessity for interoperable standards and importance of an integrated ecosystem for the carbon market to advance in the Mainland China and Hong Kong.
2023 could be a pivotal year for carbon market development in the Asia Pacific and globally. We look forward to continuing the dialogue and collaboration with all stakeholders to develop Hong Kong into a global, high-quality voluntary carbon market.
