We have recently prepared a submission together with the Greenwashing Research Project in response to the Australian Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications’ inquiry into greenwashing, to provide insight on potential legislative options that the Australian Senate can consider to protect consumers from greenwashing in Australia.
Australia is already emerging as a global spearhead against the scourge of greenwashing across sectors so seeking to further embolden that effort is a delicate task that needs consideration. In the report, we have briefly reviewed efforts from around the globe to understand the nature of approaches in tackling greenwashing, which serves as a basis for the discussion on the potential pathways forward for Australia. The report also discusses the risk of “greenhushing” which is an important aspect that regulators should consider in the delicate balancing act of developing an appropriate legislative intervention to prevent its effects from impeding the progress we have made thusfar in the sustainability transition.
